What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is an ancient mind-body health system developed in India, and practiced for thousands of years. Ayurveda means the science of life (Ayur means life, Veda means knowledge or science). Ayurveda continues to be one of our most advanced understandings of the connection between the mind and the body and provides the tools to realize your full human potential. The main tenants are:

1)   The mind and the body are inextricably connected

2)   What a body consumes and the way it digests will determines the body's health.

3)   The mind governs all. Awareness and peace are the guiding force of health. To avoid disease is to depend upon bringing our mind and body into balance.

With meditation to free the thoughts, yoga to expand the body, and Ayurvedic treatments to inspire the physical and mental well being, one can find true balance.

 
 

Understand your Prakruti and your Vikruti

Your Prakruti is, what western psychology calls, your temperament. You are born with it – it does not change and it affects all your responses. Your Dosha is the total balance of your physical and mental wellbeing - deeply affected by your Prakruti and the physical being you were born with.  Your Vikruti is your current way of life that affects your Dosha. Your Dosha is determined by your Prakruti and your Vikruti.

Through Ayurveda, and a greater awareness of your Prakruti and your Vikruti, you can rebalance your Dosha.

DIGESTION

Ayurveda believes that one’s health and mental well-being are determined fundamentally by your digestion. The way to seek health and balance is to learn the foods that best serve the balance of your Dosha. A simple way to manage a healthy diet is to include the six Ayurvedic tastes (sweet, salty, sour, pungent, bitter, and astringent) in each meal.  However, certain Doshas are better balanced by greater amounts of hot versus cold ingredients or more sweet versus pungent ingredients. 

 

SLEEP

According To Ayurveda, as well as western research, sleep is critical to the restoration of our bodies. A lack of restful sleep causes depression, anxiety, aging, and confusion. It also weakens the immune system and alter one’s ability to work well and enjoy life with friends and family.

MINDFULNESS

The body is a wonderfully smart monitor of itself through signals of comfort and discomfort. If your body sends a signal of physical or emotional distress, it is important to recognize, respect and respond. The past is about regret, the future about anxiety. Only the present is about the pleasure of the moment being lived. Unlike the mind, the body lives in the present and never quits.
